About Kaya and Luna

To be revised - Kaya is no longer with us.

Welcome to our photo blog! I'm Kaya, a two year old fawn Great Dane who lives in Australia. I have a sidekick (ok, sister) called Luna. Luna is a Great Dane too, coloured blue (the trendy name for grey) and one year old (nearly one and a half, she reminds me) and used to try and be a show dog. Now she does agility instead!

My special talent is modelling. I get lots of practice because our Mum is a dog photographer, so whenever she doesn't have other dogs to take photos of, she practices on us. I'm very talented at modelling and Luna is well, not quite so talented. She does try though.

We get to do lots of different things with our Mum and Dad - going to the beach is a definite favourite. We love sharing our many adventures with the world through our blog. Oh and we also love receiving comments - hope to hear from you soon!

Luna is home!

I’ve been worrying about Luna all day as soon as I learned that she wasn’t getting ’sprayed’, she was getting ’speyed’, which is a lot scarier! I kind of half remember my spey experience and it wasn’t very nice, though I did get a lot of sympathy and attention out of it which is always good!

Mum and Dad had to drive up to the city place to get her so they didn’t get home until it was dark. I was pretty worried to start with but when I saw Luna get out the car verrrry slowwwly I was very concerned! She wagged her tail when she saw me but I don’t think she really knew who I was. She wags her tail at anything most of the time.

As soon as she came inside, she eased herself very gently down on a bed on the floor, looking very sleepy.

I went over and sniffed her but she didn’t do anything. It was really weird.

2009-02-26-0004-1

She was just so sleepy and dopey! Plus her stomach smelled strange and looked a bit weird too.

2009-02-26-0006-1

I thought I better lay down and protect her just in case any bad people or doggies might find her. She wouldn’t be able to defend herself! Poor Luna.

I really hope my little sister gets better soon so we can run and play just like we used to. I guess she will, cos I had the same thing and I am fine now! Just a waiting game I suppose, lucky I’m a pretty patient kinda puppy.

Jackie - My goodness Kaya, you are a beautiful girl! I think you are getting better looking every day.

Stephanie - These are great pictures of the bond between your two pups! Kaya is so happy to have Luna back where as Luna just wants to rest. Great shots!

Claire - awww, poor luna! our puppy (6 months) is due to be spayed sometime in the next several months and i'm dreading it... i just felt so bad for our older dog when we spayed her --- i hate watching them feel bad and not understand why. at least it's a speedy recovery!

Luna’s Getting Sprayed

I knew today was some kind of special day as soon as Mum called Luna in to have cuddles on the bed. This usually only happens on weekends! And today definitely isn’t a weekend. Then after we all got up, Luna got more special cuddles from Dad (who I don’t think was actually properly awake yet).

2009-02-26-0001

Not to be left out, I made sure I got special cuddles too.

2009-02-26-0011

Mum explained to me that today was a special day cos Luna was getting sprayed. We were going to go for a long drive up to the city and we had to leave her at the vet place all day, and pick her up again tonight.

The bit I don’t understand is, why does she have to go all the way up there to get sprayed? Mum and Dad spray us all the time with the hose in the front yard. I guess it must be some kind of special spray.

I kinda hoped that it was all some kind of joke and that we were actually just going to the beach (you can get sprayed there too with the waves!), but nope, we headed in totally the wrong direction.

2009-02-26-0020

When we got there, we both had to stand on a measuring platform kinda thing to see how heavy we were. I thought I would be way heavier cos I am heaps taller, but I was only 53 kilograms! Luna the little fatty was 50 kg! After that, Luna went into a little room where they did strange things to her (glad I wasn’t her when they stuck that thing up her bum – ewww!) and then Mum took her out the back with the nice lady and then came back without her.

That was it! Luna was gone!

On the way home, we stopped for some breakfast for Dad. I was a bit sad cos Luna was gone, so he gave me some of his muffin. I thought I better bung on the sad and upset show for a bit longer and politely declined.

2009-02-26-0024

But I made sure I kept a close eye on it so I could eat it when I got home.

2009-02-26-0025

So that’s it so far – now I’m at home, Mum is about to go to work, and later on we are going to pick up Luna from the spraying place (I hope she won’t be too wet).

EDIT: Ok Mum just informed me that I got it wrong – the word is “SPEY” not “SPRAY”. Oops! So apparently it’s nothing to do with getting wet with water, and more to do with something that happened to me a while ago

Ahliah - Woohooo, I likez getting sprayed! I chase the water spraying snake all over the front lawn. Oh, spey not spray, youz sure? Thatz not nize. Had that done to me as well, hope Luni bounce back as well quickly az I didz, I wuz reedy to play the very next day but the humnz kept me in my crate... Licks and leanz Ahli

Cheryl - Ohh no poor Luna, I think it is cute how Kaya accompanies her to the Vet, for morale support. I hope it goes well and she recovers soon, I have been lurking and not commenting ;), I love the new blog and larger photos of the girls. The hubster aint bad looking either!

Rosalynne - We hopz Luna gets to feeling bettrz soon! Don't be of worrying Luna, yur sissy will be back! Kirby, Kaley, & Ronnie

Susan Bourne - I thought my boys were big at 96lbs and 87lbs (43kg and 39kg), but goodness girls, you are mighty grand, aren't you?! I must say, however, you certainly hide your weight beautifully in those sleek bodies. Hugs and kisses for a speedy recovery "little" Luna. Tuk & Jack's Mom, Susan

Three Amigos

Some mornings, me and Mum head off to the beach really early and meet up with Mum’s friend for a walk. We take Mum’s little blue car cos Dad doesn’t wake up that early, so that means only I can fit – Luna misses out! It’s special me and Mum time, I think Luna understands though (she doesn’t mind sleeping in with Dad anyways).

Sometimes we have the beach all to ourselves in the mornings.

2009-02-19-0002

The morning light is really nice, though it can get a bit glarey on the water! I usually trot off for a quick swim anyway though.

2009-02-19-0003

I usually have two partners in crime on our early morning beach walks – Mum’s friend’s doggies – Spot and Boss.

2009-02-19-0008 2009-02-19-0010

We all get along pretty well, even though we are all different sizes!

2009-02-19-0021

Being up in the dunes is nice in the morning, we like to stand up there and survey our domain.

2009-02-19-0023

We take turns keeping a lookout.

2009-02-19-0025

2009-02-19-0030

When we’re done, we like to cool off with a swim in the surf.

2009-02-19-0033

What a great way to start the day!

Catherine - Oww, so special. xo

Susan Bourne - What a lucky girl Kaya is to get special alone time with Mum. I would like to see a picture of Luna at home sleeping in with Dad, though. I wonder if she crowds Dad the way my baby Jack crowds me!

Allison (Dog Mom) - Dat is soooo beewootiful!! We wishez we had beeches neer arr howse, but we have lots of cornfeelds insted. Yur palies look like a lot of fun! Wuv, Gus and Waldo

Tatelina from DOL - WOW! I love your photos! And great story lines!! :D :D :D

My Faces

Being a professional dog model, I have to have a wide range of facial expressions available for use. As a doggy, it can be a bit hard sometimes – so I try and practice as much as possible. Especially when Mum has her camera out.

This is my “enquiring” face. Also known as the “looking at Mum like she’s some kind of weirdo” face.

2009-02-03-0036 2009-02-03-0037

Here’s my “questioning” and “alert” faces.

2009-02-03-0149 2009-02-03-0151

Wow practicing all these looks makes my face hurt! I better sit down and rest before attempting the last one – my “I can do no wrong” face.

2009-02-03-01651 2009-02-03-0166

I bet there are lots of doggies out there who are very good at doing this face! It’s pretty much a pre-requisite for living with humans (great for getting out of trouble when you’ve done something they didn’t want you to – aka “wrong”).

By the way, happy Valentines Day to all you guys! We hope you have a great day with your Valentines – love and licks from Kaya and Luna! xxxooo

Allison (Dog Mom) - These pictures are soooo great! We just love your babies! Happy Valentine's Day! Wuv, Gus and Waldo

Honey the Great Dane - Hi Kaya and Luna, Thank you for your lovely message about Lemon and Hsin-Yi's father. It is wonderful to have friends like you at these difficult times. I LOVE your new blog! It shows your photos so much better and I love the new colours. Can't wait to catch up on your old posts... Slobbers, Honey the Great Dane

The Zoo Crew - Love the new blog! We've been remiss in visiting blogs but hope to do better! I love the BIG pictures!! How do you get them so big??

Charlotte Reeves - Hey Zoo Crew - glad you could make it back! We switched to a new design template with lots of room, it means we can make the pictures wider. Yay!
