About Kaya and Luna

To be revised - Kaya is no longer with us.

Welcome to our photo blog! I'm Kaya, a two year old fawn Great Dane who lives in Australia. I have a sidekick (ok, sister) called Luna. Luna is a Great Dane too, coloured blue (the trendy name for grey) and one year old (nearly one and a half, she reminds me) and used to try and be a show dog. Now she does agility instead!

My special talent is modelling. I get lots of practice because our Mum is a dog photographer, so whenever she doesn't have other dogs to take photos of, she practices on us. I'm very talented at modelling and Luna is well, not quite so talented. She does try though.

We get to do lots of different things with our Mum and Dad - going to the beach is a definite favourite. We love sharing our many adventures with the world through our blog. Oh and we also love receiving comments - hope to hear from you soon!

Fun with Rocky

One of my favourite things to do these days is to hang out with Rocky while Mum rides him! Most of the time, we go ‘out the back’ to this huge paddock with cows, where we get to run really fast. Running with Rocky really fun, horses are very fast! Sometimes though, we just muck around in the arena place instead. Jumping is my favourite thing to do – I can do a whole horsey jump course – even better than Rocky can!

If Mum is just riding around though, I like to trot around with them and supervise. This time Mum was riding Rocky ‘bareback’ which means without a saddle contraption thing! People are always telling Mum that she should put a saddle on me for some reason. I’m glad she doesn’t. I think Rocky is happier without a saddle too. It just makes it a bit harder for Mum though, so she doesn’t go very fast for very long. He’s a bit bony, she says!

I’m usually pretty happy just following them around. I try not to get in the way, but sometimes there is something awesome that needs sniffing and I stop in front of them, but Mum just yells ‘QUICK!’ and I get outa the way pretty fast!

PA070220 PA070262

The best part is when we get to do jumping! I love jumping. I like showing Rocky how it’s done.

PA070234

Unfortunately he hasn’t quite got the knack of hanging his tongue out the side like I do, which is an integral part of jumping. And everything, really. But he does try, and that’s the main thing.

PA070239

One thing that Rocky is getting pretty good at is modelling. Mum has taught him to stand pretty and put his head down like this to make him look handsome. Being a budding professional model myself, I like to stand by and give a few tips here and there.

He still doesn’t get the importance of the tongue thing, but we’re working on it.

Comment

Judy - Luna--So good to see you again. Rocky is very lucky to have such a wonderful friend and teacher. Keep working with him on the tongue thing--everything you do is so much easier if your tongue is not confined to your mouth!

Michelle - wow Luna - jumping horse jumps with your tongue hanging out AND your ears up like a horse. You are cleverer than Rocky.

Boxen and Bella - What a special friend you have there Luna! He probaby will not ever be as good a model as you but he sure is shiny. I am glad to see you post again.

zara - i love these photos there so good and luna looks soooo happy wish i was there =] c ya soon =] xx

Ana - Nice photos! Rocky is so handsome :D I love horses Luna is very happy there with you and Rocky. cheers

Catherine - Rocky looks amazing in the last shot. And how cute with both jumping, looks like fun :)

Chelsea + Shiloh - Nice... just wondering what lens your using for the front on shots?

Charlotte Reeves - Hi Chelsea + Shiloh - these photos were taken with my friend's camera - it's just a little happy snap Olympus waterproof thing - nothing special!

Testing the Light

You guys probably all know that I’m not the only doggy that Mum takes photos of – she is a special doggy photographer and often takes photos of other doggies for their owners! Anyways, she had a shoot lined up with a lady and her Labrador dog for a really early morning session on the beach – my beach – the Spit. Mum told me that she wanted to ‘test the light’ (whatever that means) and use me as the ‘test subject’ so off we went to the beach one morning, really super early! Before the sun even got up!

When we got there, it was getting light but the moon was still up and the sky was a really deep blue. Mum said that it was perfect, because my full proper name is ‘Hildydane Luna Blue’ – which kind of means blue moon!

2009-09-09-0512

There were a few clouds on the horizon but when the sun finally came up above them, it was really pretty.

2009-09-09-0504

2009-09-09-0522

There was no one else there to start with, so we had the whole beach to ourselves!

2009-09-09-0513

Mum says that the light is really nice at this time in the morning. You can play around with it and take photos like the one above, where I am all dark, or you can do something different with the camera and take photos where I look normal, and everything else is really bright! This photo was taken about the same time as the one above, look at the difference! Mum says it’s to do with something called ‘exposure’ – but hey, that’s getting just a little too complicated for a doggy like me!

2009-09-09-0516

We moved up into the dunes for some more photos, it was time for me to get to work modelling! That’s how I earn my breakfast, apparently.

2009-09-09-0528

I like being high up in the dunes, cos you can look down on the beach and see everything that’s going on.

2009-09-09-0532

We saw a couple of surfers arrive.

2009-09-09-0534

Mum was really loving the light!

brooke & darwin - great pictures! you're so lucky to have such a pretty beach to go run and take pictures at! I wish we had something near to us like that to take Darwin to. You mom takes such great pictures!

Michelle - Luna, you have a real blue glow in those shots. Your mum is very clever and you make a wonderful model.

Nic Reeves - love the bottom pic sis! great to get the moon pics in there

jon - Love the stylish new collar, Luna!

Boxen and Bella - What a pretty model you are Luna! I have always admired your mom's ability to get some really great pictures. My mom's camera thingy is not really very advanced, the only cool thing it does is take pictures underwater. Be sure and keep an eye on those surfers, you never know when someone might want a new surfer doggy, you could have tried a new sport. hehe love from Boxen and Bella

Ana - Very nice these photos! Luna is a great model, wherever she is!

Jenny - Oh Luna you are always beautiful but I love the pictures that have your "blue" shadow on your sides. Absolutely gorgeous!

Rosalynne - It never fails to amaze me that the pictures you take are absolutely beautiful! Luna - you have such a pretty collar on! I really like the last picture of you!

Rosalynne - Charlotte, I forgot to tell you that I love the new header!

Spot - Oww sweet friend, I so so sooo miss being there with you. Barking, chasing birds, splashing in the water and running a muck. Especially that fresh time of morning :)

Izzy and Me

Well, I’ve been heavily berating Mum for her lack of postings lately and I’m happy to say, it’s finally paid off! You’ve already met Izzy from the sneak peek post a while back… she’s very little… (well compared to me anyway)

2009-08-15-0504

Izzy came to visit me for a whole weekend! She’s a 9 week old Great Dane x Ridgeback x Mastiff (mostly Great Dane though) and her colour is called brindle, isn’t it pretty? Izzy likes to chew on sticks, I guess that’s the Great Dane in her coming out.

2009-08-15-0523

Unfortunately, she also likes chewing on me.

2009-08-15-0535

I put up with it, she’s just a little puppy…

2009-08-15-0538

She does have very sharp little teeth though!

2009-08-15-0541

I make sure I don’t bite her with my teeth, so I end up looking a bit gummy.

2009-08-15-0542

Izzy seemed to have a bit of a fascination with my belly. I think I might have reminded her of her mummy?

2009-08-15-0577 2009-08-15-0578

Mum thought Izzy was very pretty, and talked her into doing some modelling. She didn’t do a bad job, for a newbie!

2009-08-15-0587

Okay, so Izzy is just a little bit too cute and a little bit too good at the whole modelling thing. I had to think fast! I didn’t want her taking over my job, so I thought I better regain my superiority. What better way than proving my dominance with the stick! I lulled her into a false sense of security…

2009-08-15-0610 2009-08-15-0612

Drew her in, let her think she had a chance, then boom! I was off! No catching me!

2009-08-15-0615 2009-08-15-0616

It was kinda nice having Izzy to visit, someone to play with is always good! Maybe one day I will get another sister or maybe even a brother, but for now, it’s pretty cool being the centre of attention all the time!

Love and licks, Luna xo

I will take the "paw it forward" advice...thanks, again, for sharing her with us, Charlotte (and deep gratitude to Ana, for this stirring, wrenching tribute)!

Caroline - Hi, this is the hills are alive from flickr...just want to say I was really moved by the video. What a fabulous presentation of your pix, and lovely, lovely dogs.
