About Kaya and Luna

To be revised - Kaya is no longer with us.

Welcome to our photo blog! I'm Kaya, a two year old fawn Great Dane who lives in Australia. I have a sidekick (ok, sister) called Luna. Luna is a Great Dane too, coloured blue (the trendy name for grey) and one year old (nearly one and a half, she reminds me) and used to try and be a show dog. Now she does agility instead!

My special talent is modelling. I get lots of practice because our Mum is a dog photographer, so whenever she doesn't have other dogs to take photos of, she practices on us. I'm very talented at modelling and Luna is well, not quite so talented. She does try though.

We get to do lots of different things with our Mum and Dad - going to the beach is a definite favourite. We love sharing our many adventures with the world through our blog. Oh and we also love receiving comments - hope to hear from you soon!

Big dogs can jump

Looking at my blog recently, you’d  be forgiven for thinking that all I do is hang out at the beach! It’s just sooo fun in winter though, the weather is almost better than summer (in summer there are lots of storms and rain) and cos I’m a doggy, I don’t care that the water is a little cold! As long as the sun is shining and the water is clear and there are lots of doggies and people, that’s good enough for me.

I especially love it when we get to go to the beach with friends! I luuurrrve my friend Brielle, she always throws sticks for me into the surf. There wasn’t very much surf this time though!

We call this ‘the stick throwing dance’.

Around the calm side at our beach, there was lots of people and doggies swimming around.

Soon enough we met up with a new friend! The blue Great Dane behind me with the purple collar is Willow. She just went to live with one of Mum’s friends, so I’ll be seeing her a lot!

Willow and me are even related, we come from the same breeder. My Mum and Dad are the same as her Grandma and Grandpa. I think that means she’s some sort of niece? Meh, we had more important things to think about, like fetching sticks!

Willow is pretty young, 11 months old. She’s naturally pretty awesome at swimming, just like me. Guess it must be in the genes!

I think Willow is gonna end up a bigger doggy than me, she’s pretty much bigger all over already!

It’s kinda fun having another doggy like me to run around with and gang up on other dogs. Watch out Staffy (he loved being chased)!

We weren’t the only Great Danes on the beach, after a while my friend Zephyr came swimming over from the island with his Dad. I thought I better go out and escort him back to shore.

Something new that I’ve been doing lately, is JUMPING! When people flick water up, I pretend to jump for it and catch it in my mouth. It’s just a front though, of course I know I can’t catch it! I just use it as an excuse to show off my awesome jumping skills.

I don’t think Willow really understands what all the fuss is about, she likes to watch though!

My new friend Lorelle (Willow’s mum) was throwing the water here and Brielle was taking the photos. I reckon she’s an even better photo-taker than my mum sometimes! But shhh…

I call this one the “Kangaroo”.

This is the “Reverse Kangaroo”

I think I might have scared Willow a bit here.

After all that jumping around, we all had a bit of a rest. Here’s Willow hanging out with her mum.

And then Willow with Brielle. She gets around a bit, likes her cuddles!

Ok so I lied, everyone else had a rest, but I still wanted to chase the fun water! Uh, I mean, jump around and show off!

Going to the beach with Willow was heaps of fun, can’t wait to do it again. Pretty sure Mum is eyeing her up as a potential photographic model too, uh oh, watch out Willow, it’s not all as glamorous as it seems!

If you want to see me and Willow playing at the beach, check it out on my Facebook page here!

Oscar the Maltese - Hi Luna, I'm Oscar the Maltese x from Melbourne. I've been following your blog for a while and absolutely love your human's photography! I especially love the photograph of you springing up in the air with the water droplets all around you. All that sunshine glistening off your fur is making me long for summer. Melbourne is so dreary right now, so thanks for cheering me up! Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I have an award for you at my blog. Hope you like it! Love, Oscar and the gang

Rosalynne - We are in awe of your jumping skillz Luna! What a fun day at the beach. When it is winter here (Missouri, USA) there is lots of snow and cold so playing outside doesn't last long. We aren't water babies like you, but we hunt in our backyard quite often! We like to chase squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks... do you? many barks and wags... Kirby, Kaley, Ronnie :P

Lisa Prince Fishler - You are so lucky... a beach that allows dogs??????? The coolest!!

Paula - Awesome pictures of the danes swimming. Wish mine wasn't scared to go all the way in the water! BTW: what kind of camera do you use? Great photography.

Michelle - Oh this beach looks so beautiful! There aren't too many beaches here in Florida where you can take your dogs, and I can't think of ONE that's this beautiful!!

Winter Beach Fun

I’m so happy I live in a warm place! Mum has told me about places where cold white stuff falls from the sky, and it’s just like living in the white cold box where my dinner is kept. I’m so glad I live somewhere we can go to the beach and run around just like normal! The water is sometimes a little bit cold but being a doggy, I don’t mind so much (even if the humans make a bit of a fuss).

My favourite beach to go to is called ‘Currumbin’. It’s nice there cos we can choose from the surf on one side, and the calm water on the other side. Even if it’s a bit of a windy day, the calm side is usually a lot less windy and cold. Lots of people take their doggies there and we all hang out and fetch sticks and chase each other around and go swimming. I like going with friends, and this time we went with my Mum’s funnest friend Brielle and my mate Archie.

Brielle loves playing with us and spends lots of time throwing sticks for me out into the water to fetch!

And helping me dig holes. She’s a pretty handy human to have around really. Though I think here she might have been sabotaging my hole by flooding it! I blame Archie.

We all know how much I love swimming. I’m trying to get Archie to like swimming too. He doesn’t really do the swimming thing, in fact sometimes he doesn’t even like getting his feet wet. He is quite good at jumping though!

Mum and Brielle are trying to get Archie swimming by luring him into the water with sticks. It kinda works.

Sort of.

I can’t see what the big deal is personally. I mean, how hard is it? It’s just water….? I like to show Archie how to do it, but apparently he has to learn for himself. So Mum has to hold me out of the way!

When he finally gets the stick, he runs off with it thinking he’s very clever.

Whereas I pretty much just know I’m clever. No luring out into the water required for me! I like to LAUNCH and make a big SPLASH!! The other doggies look on and feel sad cos they know they will never be as good as me at launching.

I kinda feel sorry for them. Check out what they’re missing out on – pure FUN!

Racing around with my friends is pretty fun too though. It’s not all about me.

When we are almost ready to go home and I’m feeling a bit tired and worn out, I like to hang out and chill with my friends up on the beach, all the while keeping an eye on goings-on. Mum calls it getting my ‘serious pants’ on.

I don’t think Brielle understands ‘serious-pants’ though. This was a most undignified moment. Lucky I like her so much and forgave her!

Michelle - I love your launch action Luna. Keep loving the water!

Underwater Fun

Mum has a special camera that she can take under the water, how fun! She took some video of me as well as some photos. I don’t actually put my head under the water (except when I’m dunking for semi-floating sticks, oh, and chasing coconuts) so I never really see what goes on under there. It’s actually pretty cool!

I don’t really know how I swim, I just kinda run under the water and somehow I get where I want to go.

The only problem is, when I have rather big claws. Mum keeps them trimmed so they’re not sharp, but they are still pretty big!

If someone gets in the way of them when I’m swimming, sometimes I kinda accidentally, well, ‘get’ them. And this is what happens. This is my friend Brielle. Well, she’s actually Mum’s friend, but I like her so much I call her my friend too! I’m sowwy Brielle…..

My boyfriend Lupe was at the beach too. He doesn’t really like swimming just yet, but we’re trying to convince him it’s fun!

I like swimming with my Mum. It makes me happy. Our friend Brielle took these awesome photos of us!

Sometimes underwater I cheat and put my back legs on the ground.

Then Mum grabs my front legs and I can stand just like a person!

A lot of the time I just kinda float around by myself though. It helps having an amazing floating bum.

When I finally got out of the water, after neglecting my boyfriend Lupe (sorry Lupe! I just really love swimming!) we had time for a quick dig around in the sand together.

You can always tell how much fun digging is, by how much sand you get on your face. Lupe had a lot of fun, obviously. I still think he’s handsome though!

Brielle - I love you Miss Luna xoxox You're one of my BESTEST friends!! Most of my best friends have 4 legs! except for your Mummy x

jen hague - So fun! I love the underwater photo and video abilities. Great Danes are such amazing creatures. I just love them and admire you for taking such good care of Luna!

Paula - I can't get enough of the underwater photos! Would love to try this with my male dane, but he'd be trying to climb on top of me, resulting in those familiar scratches! May I add your link to my blogroll on my site? I will delete it if you would rather not. Thanks.

I love swimming!

So you all know how much I love swimming. Now I have an awesome video to prove it! We went to the beach on the weekend with Archie, Mum and her fun friend Brielle and they took lots of video and photos of me swimming around with Mum’s special camera that goes underwater! There are pictures to come, but in the meantime here’s the video -
