About Kaya and Luna

To be revised - Kaya is no longer with us.

Welcome to our photo blog! I'm Kaya, a two year old fawn Great Dane who lives in Australia. I have a sidekick (ok, sister) called Luna. Luna is a Great Dane too, coloured blue (the trendy name for grey) and one year old (nearly one and a half, she reminds me) and used to try and be a show dog. Now she does agility instead!

My special talent is modelling. I get lots of practice because our Mum is a dog photographer, so whenever she doesn't have other dogs to take photos of, she practices on us. I'm very talented at modelling and Luna is well, not quite so talented. She does try though.

We get to do lots of different things with our Mum and Dad - going to the beach is a definite favourite. We love sharing our many adventures with the world through our blog. Oh and we also love receiving comments - hope to hear from you soon!

Testing the Light

You guys probably all know that I’m not the only doggy that Mum takes photos of – she is a special doggy photographer and often takes photos of other doggies for their owners! Anyways, she had a shoot lined up with a lady and her Labrador dog for a really early morning session on the beach – my beach – the Spit. Mum told me that she wanted to ‘test the light’ (whatever that means) and use me as the ‘test subject’ so off we went to the beach one morning, really super early! Before the sun even got up!

When we got there, it was getting light but the moon was still up and the sky was a really deep blue. Mum said that it was perfect, because my full proper name is ‘Hildydane Luna Blue’ – which kind of means blue moon!

There were a few clouds on the horizon but when the sun finally came up above them, it was really pretty.

2009-09-09-0522

There was no one else there to start with, so we had the whole beach to ourselves!

2009-09-09-0513

Mum says that the light is really nice at this time in the morning. You can play around with it and take photos like the one above, where I am all dark, or you can do something different with the camera and take photos where I look normal, and everything else is really bright! This photo was taken about the same time as the one above, look at the difference! Mum says it’s to do with something called ‘exposure’ – but hey, that’s getting just a little too complicated for a doggy like me!

2009-09-09-0516

We moved up into the dunes for some more photos, it was time for me to get to work modelling! That’s how I earn my breakfast, apparently.

2009-09-09-0528

I like being high up in the dunes, cos you can look down on the beach and see everything that’s going on.

2009-09-09-0532

We saw a couple of surfers arrive.

2009-09-09-0534

Mum was really loving the light!

Finally I got to have a lie down and relax and look over my domain.

brooke & darwin - great pictures! you're so lucky to have such a pretty beach to go run and take pictures at! I wish we had something near to us like that to take Darwin to. You mom takes such great pictures!

Michelle - Luna, you have a real blue glow in those shots. Your mum is very clever and you make a wonderful model.

Nic Reeves - love the bottom pic sis! great to get the moon pics in there

jon - Love the stylish new collar, Luna!

Boxen and Bella - What a pretty model you are Luna! I have always admired your mom's ability to get some really great pictures. My mom's camera thingy is not really very advanced, the only cool thing it does is take pictures underwater. Be sure and keep an eye on those surfers, you never know when someone might want a new surfer doggy, you could have tried a new sport. hehe love from Boxen and Bella

Ana - Very nice these photos! Luna is a great model, wherever she is!

Jenny - Oh Luna you are always beautiful but I love the pictures that have your "blue" shadow on your sides. Absolutely gorgeous!

Rosalynne - It never fails to amaze me that the pictures you take are absolutely beautiful! Luna - you have such a pretty collar on! I really like the last picture of you!

Rosalynne - Charlotte, I forgot to tell you that I love the new header!

Spot - Oww sweet friend, I so so sooo miss being there with you. Barking, chasing birds, splashing in the water and running a muck. Especially that fresh time of morning :)

Helping out Mum

Today Mum told me that she’s going to be away for a while, down to the place she calls Sydney. She’s going on one of those big loud bird things that we see way up in the sky when we go to the beach sometimes!

Anyways she’s going to be doing lots of ‘work’ when she is down there – I call it ‘work’ because it isn’t really proper work – she likes doing it to much for it to be proper hard work! Mum will be taking photos of a total of SIX doggies and then going to a show where there will be even more doggies than that – all Great Danes like me! Wish I could go too but I’m a bit big for her to smuggle in her bag.

Mum borrowed a bit of new photo-taking stuff – a big long white thing! – for her trip from her friend Catherine (who has just had a little baby, can’t wait to meet him) and wanted to do some practicing. If Kaya was still around she probably would have been better for the job, but I thought I better try my hardest at modelling anyway, even though I don’t like it much!

Mum really likes this shot but I can’t really understand why. She missed most of my face!

2009-04-08-0219

This one is much better.

2009-04-08-0252

Since I haven’t had anydog to play with, I’ve been playing with myself a lot. No toy is safe! Mum and Dad laugh at me a lot, I’m really good at throwing toys around and catching them again, I’ll have to get Mum to take some moving pictures of that so you can see my skills!

2009-04-08-0257

I decided I was doing a bit toooo good of a job at this modelling business (I don’t want to have to do it all the time) so I sabotaged the rest of the shots with a bit of crafty ear-styling.

Allison (Dog Mom) - Hi Luna!! Waldo is always messing up my shots, too. Well, at least he THINKS he's messing them up. I personally think his goofy Dumbo ears are pretty cute. :)

Buster - What a trooper Luna, and such expressive eyes. Your mom has captured your spirit. Wonderful job.

Karen - Luna you are such a pretty model! Tell your mom to be safe and get some wonderful pictures. We all love our Danes!

Claire - gotta love that face in the last two...what a sweet girl she is.

Rosalynne - Luna, no matter *what* you do, you still look great! I agree with mom on the first pic, and I absolutely love that toy!!

Honey the Great Dane - Hi Luna, What are you talking about? I think you're a GREAT model!! I can't wait to see some action shots! Hey - I've got exactly the same sausage toy as you! By the way, have you come by my blog to pick up your award yet? Slobbers, Honey the Great Dane

ChicagoBeth - Luna, I think that your ear *poses* show your individuality, that devil-may-care attitude from a Dane who refuses to go along with standard ear placement. Always a beautiful standout!

DogPark - Luna, please tell your mum that I read and reread the story about your dear Kaya several times over the weekend and that even though it made me cry, it was a good cry, and one that helped me believe in good people like Charlotte Reeves and her family. You and your sister are so lucky to have such parents, and to enjoy such a life of love and warmth and fun and protection. So tell your mum that she did all the right things, and that Kaya was never afraid, and that your lives continue to touch and help people all over the globe...even crybabies like me and my mom in Maryland :)

Old Photos

Mum was looking through some photos and came across some ones she had taken with a different kind of camera, when I was about six months old. A very old camera – so old, it doesn’t even plug into the computer and uses something called ‘film’!

I think the pics are a bit strange, they’re fuzzy and kinda brown and  just show me sleeping. But I guess they are cool. Even if just because of the subject matter (me).

Honey the Great Dane - Hi guys - can you believe it? I kept looking at your feed and wondering why you hadn't posted anything new...and then today I realised that actually, the feed still had the address of your old blog! Grrr! No wonder nothing was changing! Anyway, I have now changed it so hopefully, I will be more up to date with what's happening with you! Hey listen - I wanted especially to tell you - today is my big photoshoot with Rachael Hale!! Your human may have heard of her - she is an animal portrait photographer and she has taken lots of pictures of dogs and cats and other animals and put them in books and on cards. She is working on a new book and asked me to model for some photos - am so flattered! :) Come over to my blog and see me primping for the shoot! hee! Hee! Slobbers, Honey the Great Dane

Elizabeth Stratton - Charlotte, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Kaya. I have followed her and her sister for a couple of years and I loved her dearly also. You and Kaya had a beautiful bond and I appreciate all the beautiful photography. My blue Great Dane Girl Miss Katie is now 7 and will be 8 years old next month and we offer our condolences to you all. Hugs to you and your husband and Luna. Be well and I w`ill continue to watch Luna. Love, Elizabeth

Park Mini-Story: Modelling Attempt III (by Luna)

Mum told me there is a saying 'third time lucky' – so we decided to have one last go at doing some modelling shots. We decided to try and get some more natural, non-posed ones, so the first one, Mum caught me in mid-play.

2008-12-02-9789

Mum: "Ok Luna, probably not the best look actually. Can you just relax a bit? And try not letting your tongue hang out quite so much."

2008-12-02-9790

Mum: "Not bad! Now, we really need to do something about your ears. I know inside-out is the latest fashion, but it doesn't look great in photos, can you try and flip them out the right way for me?"

Luna: "Ummm ok Mum, how about if I just do a side profile? Then its only half as bad cos you can only see one ear?"

2008-12-02-9791

Mum: "No Luna, that's not really what I want. And watch that tongue! It's starting to slip around to the side and hang out more!"

Luna: "Mum, I really kinda like my ears up like this. The other doggies think it's cool! How about if I just pin them back a bit so you can't see them so much? Like this?"

2008-12-02-9792

Mum: "Oh Luna I just want your ears to look pretty! I don't care about the latest doggy fashion. Can you please please fix them up for me? And watch your tongue too!"

Luna: "Fine then, what if I flip my tongue to the other side, and just look more alert? Does that help?"

2008-12-02-9795

Mum: "ARRRGHHH LUNA!!! I give up!!"
